Prohibit Freighter Anchorages in the Salish Sea

Whereas:

  • The pumping of ballast tanks and bilges, dragging of anchors, dumping of garbage, and continuous noise threatens one of the world's most sensitive ecosystems;
  • The federal government has recognized the Salish Sea waters as worth protecting as part of its process in establishing a National Marine Conservation Area;
  • An environmental disaster caused by one of these vessels would devastate our local economy; and
  • The anchorages were established in the traditional waters of local First Nations without their free, prior, and informed consent.

“If the federal government values these waters enough to establish a National Marine Conservation Area, then they also deserve protection from being used as an overflow industrial parking lot.” -MP Alistair Macgregor (Cowichan-Malahat-Langford)
